Houston County & Veterans Ranked Two of Nation’s Best High Schools
HOUSTON COUNTY, GA – Houston County High and Veterans High Schools made the U.S. News & World Report 2017 list of the best high schools. More than 22,000 public high schools were examined, and both schools were awarded a silver medal. Veterans High is ranked 1,621 nationally and 43rd in Georgia; Houston County High is ranked 1,800 nationally and 48th in Georgia.
Schools were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on their performance on state assessments, graduation rates and college readiness using data from the 2014-2015 school year. The College Readiness Index used Advanced Placement (AP) exam participation rates and percentage of students passing at least one AP exam. Of the 442 Georgia schools ranked for the U.S. News Best High Schools, 18 were awarded gold, 45 earned silver and 48 received bronze.
In 2014-2015, the AP participation rates at both schools was 45 percent. The graduation rate at Houston County was 95 percent; the Veterans graduation rate was 89 percent. The US News scorecard for each school is pictured. To read more about how schools were evaluated, click here.
Houston County’s high schools appear often in this national ranking. In the past few years, four schools have won a silver medal. For example, in 2016, Veterans High ranked 2,045 nationally and 50th in Georgia, and Warner Robins High ranked 2,364 nationally and 52nd in the state. In 2013, Northside High ranked 1,850 nationally and 38th in Georgia.
